"La Villa de Santiago del Saltillo",was the name that was first given to this city, capital of Coahuila. At first the economic activities where sowing corn and wheat, growing apples, peaches, and walnuts trees. After that the principal activity consisted of sheep breeding and with its wool they made blankets, and the traditional sarapes.
The fair of saltillo is celebrated every October.

When México was invaded by the frenchs, Saltillo held the powers of the Republic,Since the president Benito Juárez used a city as a shelter to escape from the invading troops in 1864.
The Ateneo Fuente, one of the first institutions of superior education in the north of the country was built in Saltillo.
In 1930 the Agricultural University Antonio Narro was created. In the 1950's the Tecnologico de Saltillo and the University of Coahuila where created, and two decades later came the autonommous university of the northeast.
